Ballad of a White Cow is must-watch cinema. This film follows the story of one woman's encounter with a tyrannical judicial system that has forever maimed her family in a way that's unspeakably horrific.
What makes this film brilliant is the way that it works on three key levels:
1️⃣ It centers Mina’s gripping struggle to process grief (and aggrievement), endure injustice, and fight to survive while providing for her deaf daughter. 😩
2️⃣ The film subtly yet astutely highlights several specific issues related to the everyday contempt, slights, and socio-cultural obstacles Iranian women must delicately navigate within the confines of Iran’s entrenched religious-patriarchal misogyny. 😰
3️⃣ Added to Mina’s distressing situation that's riddled with moral injury is a thorny…

Another compelling example of contemporary Iranian cinema. Co-directors Mayram Moghadam (also playing the lead) and Behtash Saneeha touch on universal themes of grief and loss, guilt and remorse, responsibility and mercy. Also how people lie out of shame and also out of a desire to protect others. Like Asghar Fahradi, it's a critical reflection on Iranian society, particularly the restrictions on women while at the same time reminding me of the recent anti-death penalty film "There is No Evil". But it stands on its own.
It opens with a passage from the Quran on Moses' dictum that a cow should be slaughtered in response to a man's murder. This leads into the story of Mina who's husband is executed for…

I can’t think of a country who’s political and cultural landscape is so far removed from my own, but whose cinematic and artistic output is so more aligned to what I love to watch….than Iran. It is crazy. I’ve never seen a poor film from Iran.
This is another incredible Iranian film, and the main star Maryam Moghaddam also wrote it, co Directed it. Which is pretty brave considering it’s a topical tale about how women in Iran don’t get a say on more or less anything they do. In that respect I’m unsure if this film would get released now, given what has gone on in Iran in the last 6 months.
A woman (Moghaddam) loses her husband to…

My Persian friend said to me recently that the fact she is a woman and was born in Iran means she is fated to a life of difficulty and complication. She’s given me many examples that leave me in no doubt she is right. Some of what she’s told me has made my jaw drop, but she’s quick to point out there are many Iranian women who are far worse off than she is.
Much of what she’s described to me is echoed and dramatised in wonderful Iranian films I’ve seen by the likes of Farhadi, Kiarostami and Panahi, and I can now add to that list this impressive film by co-directors and writers Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghaddam. Sanaeeha…

I'm not sure, but I think it's my 1st Iranian film and it's a near masterpiece. which tackles many of the issues facing Iranian society, with enormous respect for the film's team, who took a huge risk in its theme of justice, is quite pertinent and a real scathing plea that criticizes the omnipresence of capital punishment, where in order not to assume that we make mistakes, we still sentence someone to death, even minors (At the time of events). There's a slight problem with the pacing, but it's made up for by the magnificent, carefully executed art direction.
Above all, it's heartbreaking to follow this mother fighting to rehabilitate her husband's name, while at the same time discovering the…

It's amazing how films coming out from Iran are so emotionally complex when we know the artistic process is so complexly restrained. These filmmakers present us with tough situations that are nothing more than the reality people face in Iran, they use it as a tool for raising their voice, and it's a beautiful tool in my opinion.

"... compensate you with the full price for an adult male."
"... it was, after all, God's will."
(letting that sink in 😱🤯)"Ghasideyeh gave sefid" aka "Ballad of a White Cow" was quiet, powerful and (very) well crafted.
The synopsis isn't entirely correct (though not entirely wrong), as the movie focuses on something different, which I'll leave for your personal discovery. It's a fairly interesting, if quiet, but significant and powerful movie.
I really enjoyed Maryam Moghaddam (who also co-directs) here.. measured, quiet and yet very effective. Alireza Sanifar was a very fitting co-lead, with a very similar delivery. Avin Poor Raoufi (the daughter) was sweet.
Well, another "stunning" depiction of Iran's society, with several issues along the way…

The 2022 Catchup Project
I think I'm going to go mad.
That is if I see any more reviews of Ballad of a White Cow or indeed any other Iranian or Middle Eastern film that is about, or discusses, capital punishment that try and take a geographical high ground. Like they don't put people in the fucking gas chamber in Texas and sundry other states. The patronising tone, suggesting this subject is a problem in this region, is almost spellbinding in its idiocy from certain quarters.
Anyway, Ballad of a White Cow is too great and powerful a film to spend a good proportion of this review bitching about dipshits. I was in a good mood this morning and then…
